book news
The copyedit of my second Coastie thriller, Prepared for Rage, is done and in as of today. Next stop, galleys, and then--ta dah!--publication. That would be February 2008. You can pre-order a copy on Amazon now. I already have a third thriller planned, but I don't think I'm going to write any more Islamic terrorist types. I got a little too far inside the head of this one and it wasn't a pretty place.
I'm finishing up my short story for Powers of Detection II, set in the same Mnemosynea universe as Justice is a Two-edged Sword in Powers of Detection. It's called A Woman's Work, and this one is set in the province of Kalliope, which bears a surprising resemblance to the old Sparta of Greece. Not a great place for women, but I imagine Seer and Sword will have something to say about that.
I am also editing an anthology of crime fiction called On the Evidence, for which I have written a Liam Campbell short story. No publication date yet, anthology king Marty Greenberg is still putting the list of authors together.
I will be contributing a short story to the anthology called Two of the Deadliest, edited by Elizabeth George. My first time working with Elizabeth, I'm looking forward to it. The two in question are the sins of lust and greed. Already I know this will be one of the more fun short stories to write.
And for those of you waiting impatiently for me to get to it, yes, as of October 1st I begin work on the 16th Kate Shugak novel. The working title is Whisper to the Blood. If I live up to the outline, it will be the best Kate Shugak novel ever.
bouchercon 2007 news

I've blogged about it on the website, including for the bouchercon virgin where I walk you through just one day of the magic in store. If you like to read and you like to discover new authors, go here to register.

I recommend that you stay at the Anchorage Hilton so you don't miss anything, and before you clutch, we got a great rate, $120 a night. If you share, that's $60 each plus tax. I bet you never see that rate at that hotel again.
For those parents of aspiring teen writers, for adult aspiring authors, and for librarians, we are running a half day preconference, three hours of workshops from 1-4p run by attending authors. Email Marcy Gentemenn to register. Note: The teen writers and librarians workshops are free, the adult writers workshops are $10 at the door. All proceeds go to the Suzan Nightingale Literacy Fund.
danamaniacs news
I'll be getting together with the Danamaniacs on Thursday night at Bouchercon this year. The 'maniacs managers are the ones to contact. You have to be a member to be told where and when the party is, don't forget.
Photo is of me on the bridge of the Polar Discovery. I was dogging the footsteps of a marine pilot as he brought her into Valdez, all for the sake of an article in the December Alaska magazine. It is the most interesting, the most fun and without question the most important article I've ever written for them.

Go look at the Bouchercon 2007 blog archives, everything you ever wanted to know and then some. I'll be blogging daily from the convention as well.
Photo is of the science fiction lit workshop I led at the Kenai Public Library in March. It was a good group and a great event, made possible by a grant from Arisia.

The map is of Cook Inlet volcanos. Augustine is the one currently steaming like a tea kettle. I'm watching it very carefully out my window.
